Cubbies Aren’t Just For Preschoolers Anymore

By iqnection - May 22nd, 2012

The word cubby makes me smile.

Maybe it’s because it reminds me of simpler days when my now (late teens) teenagers went to preschool and everything revolved around “the cubby”.  At the end of a long work day, I knew that I had something special waiting for me in the cubby—a finger painting or a drawing of me with a huge head and tiny feet, macaroni sculptures, paper plate hats and yarn crafts — all lovingly created by my little sweeties. Correspondence to and from the teachers were left in the cubby, as were pictures of my darlings in various stages of their day — playing, eating or sleeping– all left in the cubby for me to savor and cherish forever.

Or maybe it’s because cubby is a funny word.

Either way, a cubby is a place of distinction as far as I am concerned. And now that one of those aforementioned sweeties just came home for the summer from her first year of college and the other sweetie can grow a mustache, the cubby has a new and more practical definition that has matured along with me—that of a closet storage system to store and organize the (literally) hundreds of pairs of shoes I have amassed over the yeCloset Designs: Shoe Rackars.
I’m no Imelda Marcos and I think many, if not most, women have accumulated a recalcitrant collection of shoes by their late forties. Shoe cubbies restrain the unrestrainable and add order to chaos.

Cubbies, for those who don’t know (e.g. men) are rows of box-like compartments stacked in layers as high as one wishes. Shoe storage cubbies come in different configurations and can be customized by a closet designer in accordance to ones individual storage needs.

The benefits of cubby shoe storage system are:

  1. Space Saving: If one were to line up 20 pairs of shoes, each pair taking up 9” of space, one would need 15 feet of shelf space. The same 20 pairs of shoes can fit in a 24” x 24” cubby shoe storage system.
  2. Money Savings: Shoes piled on the floor get kicked around and stepped on and thus need replacing more frequently. Cubby storage also keeps the shoes safe from damage by pets and free of dust.
  3. Time Savings: Unlike storage in shoe boxes, cubby shoe storage allows you to see your shoe collection at a glance and enables you to pair shoes with an outfit in a snap. Shoes are kept clean, dust free and ready to wear every time.
  4. Face Savings: Mishandled stacks of shoes tend to become aromatic over time and your living space can begin to smell like a dirty thrift shop.

And The Winner Is…

By iqnection - May 21st, 2012

It seems that America has caught a case of lottery fever. Lately it seems that every week, headlines of a new mega-millions drawing is splashed over the newspapers and internet. Remote news broadcasts from convenience stores, showcasing the long lines of would-be winners, have become common. Photographs of smiling millionaires holding a press conference ending in the presentation of the ceremonial “big check” has become familiar to the point of ordinary.

Today a study by the English National Lottery Operator Camelot was released which outlined buying trends among lottery winners. Some of the results were expected. For example, half of the mega-winners moved into a new house within three months of the award, and a quarter of the winners put up fencing, secured by a gate, around their house.
Some results were somewhat unexpected, such as; 20% of winners purchasing a dog in the months immediately following the win.

The trend that struck me however, is that 1/3 of winners installed a walk-in closet in their home immediately following the big win. Like the Custom Closet Storage Solutions - Closet & Storage Conceptsdog-trend, one can only guess the psychology of such a purchase. My guess is that people yearn to benefit from something that they perceive as a luxury, but in practicality, like dog ownership, can be enjoyed within most people’s budget.

The full list of Military Friendly Franchises® will be published in the June issue of G.I. Jobs, the July/August issue of Vetrepreneur Magazine, and on www.militaryfranchising.com, a web tool that helps veterans decide which franchise to choose.

Closet & Storage Concepts honors military veterans all year round by offering service members a 10% discount on franchise fees, special military veteran financing of 50% of the initial fee for a period of 12 months at zero interest, and a team dedicated to supporting the veteran franchisee program, thus allowing veterans to use their training and operational skills in a new civilian career.
