Now that we’ve come to a New Year, it’s likely that you’re considering reorganizing your closet and getting your home in tip-top shape. Whether that includes a trip to the Goodwill or installing a new closet storage system, it’s always refreshing to start the year off with a clean slate and an even cleaner closet. Here at Closet and Storage Concepts, we definitely understand the value of an organized home, and we love working with customers on setting up the perfect home storage system. When you’re going through all of the boxes and piles pushed towards the back of your closet, it’s worth remembering that not everything deserves to end up in the donation bin, even those old clothes you thought were never coming back in style. Here’s a list of a few 90’s fashions making their way back, so that when you’re doing your New Year’s reorganizing, you’ll know that it just might be worth holding onto those Tommy Hilfiger overalls for a few more years.

Combat Boots

Having become popular with punk rockers trawling the Army Surplus store for cheap finds, combat boots officially entered the public consciousness in the early 90’s. Featured in movies like Clueless and TV shows like My So Called Life, combat boots were everywhere, from the rock club to the fashion runway. Dr. Martens were a huge part of this trend, and the British companies sales skyrocketed throughout the 90’s. Although the combat boot trend seemed to die by the end of the decade, they’ve recently seen a comeback in a big way, with stars from Jessica Alba to Brad Pitt showing off the classic look. So, before you decide to chuck those old Timberland boots, it may be worth seeing if there’s a few contemporary looks you might be able to incorporate them into.

Snapbacks

By the late 90’s it seemed like we’d seen the last of classic snapback baseball caps. For most of the new millennium, fitted caps were about the only thing you could find if you were looking to support your local sports team. Recently, however, snapback hats are starting to make a comeback, much in the same way that trucker hats had a resurgence early in the 2000’s. Currently being popularized by stars like Chris Brown and Drake, snapback hats have a classic look that is certainly coming back into style. If you’ve got an early 90’s Milwaukee Brewers hat hiding away in the back of your closet, it may just be time to place it back into your regular repertoire.

Round Sunglasses

Round sunglasses seem to be coming back in style for the third time in the past fifty years. Originally associated with musicians like John Lennon and Janis Joplin in the 1960’s, round sunglasses had their first reappearance in the 90’s, with celebrities like Johnny Depp doing their best to invoke the classic look of the Summer of Love. It seems as though round sunglasses are poised to break back into the mainstream once again, popularized by the rap group A$AP Mob . Recent Google numbers suggest that queries about round sunglasses have increased by over 100% in the last year, demonstrating just how quickly the trend appears to be rising. So, even though summer is still months away, it’s probably a good idea to keep those round sunglasses in your closet just in case you want to make a splash on the beach when the sun starts peeking out again.

Flannel Shirts
One of the hallmarks of 90’s fashion, flannel shirts immediately call to mind Seattle and the glory days of grunge. From Kurt Cobain to the Al Borlan, flannel shirts we’re everywhere during the pre-millennial decade. Like combat boots, flannel showed up in 90’s fashion due to various young musicians and artists proclivity for finding their clothes at the local thrift store. By the middle of the decade, upscale fashion houses began incorporating flannel into their designs, demonstrating just how far the style grew during the period. In recent years, flannel has been making a major comeback for many of the same reasons it thrived in the 1990’s, and stars such as Kim Kardashian and Justin Timberlake have been known to rock a 90’s inspired flannel from time to time.

When organizing a closet, it’s essential to determine just what’s worth keeping around and what should go the way of polyester pants and platform shoes. We hope this list has inspired you to look into a few of the older pieces you have stuck in a box somewhere before placing them by the curb, and if you end up wanting to keep more than you were originally planning, remember that Closet and Storage Concepts is always ready to help you design and install a closet organizing system that suits your particular wants and needs.
