I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but the cost of everything seems to be going up.
Shocking, I know.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and fancy-schmansy barista-made coffee was the first on my hit-list of things I could live without in order to economize. The next was the gym membership, which was easy because pretending to exercise in the presence of strangers was getting old anyway. In its place I’ve substituted riding my bike to complete chores locally. This is a two-fer, because I’m now getting the exercise that I pretended to get before, and am saving on gas and wear-and-tear on my car in the process.
The skyrocketing costs of clothes and utilities seem to be the cruelest to overcome however, because it’s tough to imagine life without one or the other of these (insert nudist colony joke here).
Thanks to the closet organization systems specialists at Closet & Storage Concepts, there is a solution that will save on both clothing and energy bills, and help preserve that little place we’ve grown attached to—that being Mother Earth. Installing hanging roads for clothes drying is an economical way to save money and has many other benefits as well:
- Line drying conserves energy and protects the environment by saving fossil fuels.
- Did you ever wonder where the lint you find in the dryer trap came from? Lint is the remnants of clothing fibers that have been beat-up and pulled off clothing during the tumble dry process. There is a little less of your clothing investment every time you use the dryer. Line-dried clothing on average lasts twice as long as tumble-dried clothing.
- Dryer heat is a death wish for elastic. Expensive undergarments, leggings, tights, sports apparel, (or anything made of wool) should always be lined dried.
- Air-drying can reduce wrinkles, saving the time and energy associated with ironing.
- Indoor line drying in the winter adds much needed humidity to the living space.
- Line-drying eliminates static cling, which is caused from the static electricity produced as a result of the clothes repeatedly rubbing together as they tumble.
- Line-drying can save property, and even lives—it is estimated that clothes dryer fires account for 15,600 structure fires, 15 deaths and 400 injuries annually. The yearly costs in the United States for loss due to clothes dryer fires are estimated at $99 million.
