Classic New England homes are beautiful expressions of the area’s rich history. However, the architectural design of many of these Boston homes, means you may have to work with smaller closet space. Just because you may be working with a smaller space, doesn’t mean there isn’t room left for a little organization! Make a little space go a long way with these great tips on how to keep your small closet organized.
Make a Plan
Before starting right away, first take some time to decide what you’d like to store in the small closet space. It helps to think about the following questions:
- What is the purpose of this closet?
- How often will you need to access the items in the closet?
- Will this closet be used for clothing, shoes, and other accessories?
- Will the closet be used to store all of your big winter boots and coats?
- Will this closet be used for storing miscellaneous items from around the house?
Having a specific plan and purpose for your closet makes customizing and organizing your closet much easier. It’s easy to get lost when you don’t have a clear end goal in mind so visualize how you would like your closet to look and function.
Group Similar Items Together
If your small closet is going to be used to house various things it will be best to organize everything by category. Keep all of your hats, handbags, and scarfs in one place. Pants can be folded neatly and stacked on a shelf.
This way you won’t have to take everything out of the closet every time you’re looking for your favorite pair of pants. If you don’t have a pantry, a closet is a great way to store items from your kitchen. If this is the case, think about placing all of your favorite recipes into a small box, and placing additional shelving for canned goods.
Install Additional Shelving and Storage Organizers
You’d be surprised as to how much more can fit into a closet when you implement extra storage pieces such as bins and hooks. We are experts in installation and can assist with building additional shelving and other custom storage inserts. Whatever you need, we can help!
