Spring is the most popular time for cleaning and organizing a home. Not only is there the promise of warmer weather in the near future, the freshness of a brand new year is still very evident. The following tips can help you get organized as you embark on your spring 2017 cleanup.
1. Declutter
It’s easy to get into the mindset that things bring you happiness, but too much stuff breeds all sorts of problems. Not only can it be stressful to live in a place that is unorganized, but clutter seems to start out small before multiplying quickly. Every item that is in your home should be useful or bring you happiness. If it doesn’t, get rid of it.
2. Sell or Donate Unwanted Items
Not everything that you get rid of is going to be trash. Instead, you’ll likely have some usable items that you simply don’t need anymore. Instead of throwing away that perfectly good waffle iron or that set of sheets, determine if there is a market for them or simply donate them to a local charity. If you have a lot of items to get rid of, you could even do a garage sale!
3. Make a schedule
Being methodical about your spring cleaning serves two purposes: it shows that you are making progress – no matter how small – and it helps you stay organized. As an example, you could tackle spring cleaning your bedroom on Monday, the living room on Wednesday and the kids’ rooms over the weekend. Don’t let your schedule make you feel overwhelmed, though. Just because something is on the schedule, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to complete it all that day. For instance, you might need to take several weekends to make a dent in your kids’ rooms.
4. Tackle the inside
Cleaning and organizing those items that are in plain sight every day is an easy thing to remember. Just as important, though, is to tackle the inside of spaces that are often hidden by doors. It’s a great time to wipe window tracks, dust and vacuum inside kitchen drawers and the pantry, and clean closet shelves.
5. Use the right tools
Cleaning without the proper tools can be downright frustrating and leave you with results that are less than you’d hoped for. Investing in the right tools not only gives you great results but will also help you use your time more productively. Organizational tools and plans help you develop specific places for all of your belongings so that cleaning is less of a chore in the future. As an added bonus, you’ll spend less time looking for items if they have a designated place.
