Unhappy teenager in closetThe closet space that was just right for your child will likely not be perfect for your teen. As kids get older, their needs, desires, and tastes change and it is likely that their closet will need to change with them. Here are some tips that can help you and your youngster transform their closet.

Talk about It

You may have ideas of what you want your teen’s closet to look like, but remember that it’s not your closet. Your teen will be the one using it day in and day out, so include him or her in the closet design process. Including your teen will help you create a closet that suits his or her needs; this will help your teen keep their room clean and organized without needing to be nagged.

Consider Privacy

As your child gets older, he or she will likely become increasingly concerned with privacy. This means that open shelves with items on display will no longer be used as much. Instead, your teen may want to store personal items behind closed doors or drawers. If they have a large closet with a lot of shelf space, consider investing in storage containers that can be used to keep personal items organized yet out of sight.

Balance Needs and Wants

Encourage your teen to think about the utility of their closet, not just the appearance. Your teen daughter, for instance, may feel like she needs extensive hanging space for new clothes with all of the bells and whistles. However, you may need to point out that a closet storage system with hanging areas, drawers, and shelves can help her store out-of-season items or even books. For a fun and unique project, Closet & Storage Concepts can even design closets with a built-in desk that any young person would enjoy using.

Get Rid of Clutter

Work with your teen to get rid of clutter that he or she no longer needs or even wants. Sell or give away old items that are taking up an unnecessary amount of room before you begin redesigning their closet so you’ll know exactly how much space you’ll need to store the important stuff.

Redesigning a closet to meet a teen’s needs is not as hard as it may initially seem. Work with your teen and call in professional help when warranted. Soon they’ll have an organized room that can make you both smile!
