Are you planning to clean out your garage this summer with a garage sale? If you are, make sure you’re prepared beforehand and know which items you want to sell so you’re not scrambling the day of. Here are some tips for assessing your home and sorting through items you no longer need to get ready for a successful garage sale.
Do a Walk-Through
Walk through your home and take note of any areas that seem cluttered. Then, take a closer look at these areas. Chances are, there are some items you don’t need anymore taking up space. Regardless of whether they’re cluttered or relatively empty, also make sure you take a quick look at all the closets in your home, your garage, and all your kitchen cabinets. This will help you find clothing, toys, outdoor gear, and appliances that aren’t being used. When you start clearing out items, turn an infrequently used room like the guest room or spare sitting room into an organized temporary storage space so your garage sale goods are all in one place.
Save Time for a Test Run
If you do your walk-through and clear out items that aren’t being used frequently a few weeks before your garage sale, you have the chance to test whether you’d miss anything. You and your family probably forgot that you had certain clothes, games, or other items because they were hard to see in cluttered spaces. Now that you remember them and know where they are, pay attention to how you feel about giving them away. If you ever feel inclined to grab something and use it, go ahead. Maybe that’s an item to keep. You can safely sell everything else.
Throw Some Items Away
On the day of your garage sale, only put out items that you think will sell and when the sale is over, donate whatever is left. If you suspect that you won’t be able to sell or donate an item – whether it’s damaged, dirty, or extremely old – just throw it away or if possible, recycle it. This will save you the trouble of putting it out and make sure the people who come to your garage sale aren’t distracted from your more appealing items.
