How to Upgrade Your Laundry Routine

Laundry isn’t most people’s favorite task. Sure, pulling still-warm pajamas out of the dryer on a chilly evening is one of life’s great pleasures, and we all sleep better on clean sheets. But laundry can be an endless cycle of washing, drying, and folding that never seems to end.

What if we told you that there are ways to make laundry less of a chore? If you’re fed up with endless laundry piles and never feeling like you have enough time to keep up with it all, here are some tips to help you take control and upgrade your laundry routine.

Use a Laundry Schedule

Create a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Doing laundry daily is the best way to keep it from piling up, but not everyone has the time. To set your schedule, determine how many loads of laundry you need to get done each week. Then, decide whether you want to do them all at once and have it over with, or a bit at a time so you’re not dealing with piles of folding.

One easy method of scheduling laundry is to wash different types of laundry on different days. For example, washing towels on Tuesday, clothes on Friday, and bedding over the weekend. Make sure you pick washing days when you can avoid leaving wet laundry sitting in the washer.

Get the Whole Family Involved

If you share a household, the laundry routine shouldn’t all fall on a single person’s shoulders. Spouses and other adult family members can wash and put away their own laundry. Smaller children can help sort, or carry folded laundry to the room where it goes.

This is also a good way to ensure that your kids will know how to do their own laundry when it’s time for them to help with the wash, or when they head out on their own. Their future roommates will thank you!

Sort as You Go

Instead of waiting until you’ve got a huge pile of clothes to sort, do it as you go. If you’ve got a larger home, keep a laundry basket or hamper in each room of your house and sort clothes and other washables by color and type when they get dirty. In smaller homes, multi-bin laundry hampers can help you keep track of laundry types as you go without taking up a lot of space.

Organize Your Laundry Room

A little bit of organization, some prior planning, and a touch of teamwork will make keeping up with laundry much more efficient and stress-free. Make sure your laundry room is well-lit, has plenty of storage, and is easy to navigate.
