Trying to get control of your clutter in the new year? Although it can be quite an undertaking, having a plan in place (and some insights from the experts) can be a huge advantage when preparing your home for the postholiday season.
6 December Decluttering Tips
With the new year fast approaching, many of us start thinking about how the holidays will impact our home storage. If you want to kick-start your resolution of reorganizing, here’s some of our favorite end-of-the-year advice:
1. Add an extra closet rod.
Cold weather means coats galore! And everyone likes a little variety, so why limit yourself to one closet rod? You can double your closet storage space with an additional rod.
2. Stop stacking bins and boxes.
Tired of trying to access the bottom bins in the stack? Most top-open storage bins are designed for optimal stacking, but unfortunately, they don’t accommodate this level of accessibility. You can make the switch to stackable front-loading bins, or better yet, design a custom storage solution, such as a built-in bin rack system, that allows you to slide them in and out with ease.
3. Purchase a label maker.
A simple labeling system can go a long way. Use a label maker to create and print labels for organizing your belongings. There’s no need to invest in a fancy vinyl cutter, such as a Cricut, but it’s certainly an option if you want to make creative labels that include icons, pictures, or other customizations!
4. Leverage lists.
Write a list of the contents of every box and include the season, holiday, or occasion the items are needed for. Keep it on the inside of the box or tape it to the outside so you know exactly what goes where (and when).
5. Save your packing padding.
With all those packages coming in during the giving season, you’re probably tossing out a lot of packing materials, such as paper and bubble wrap. Don’t throw it all away! You can reuse it for gift wrapping or storing fragile items.
6. Invest in specialized storage.
If you need easy access to special tools or equipment (e.g., shovels, a snowblower, sleds, and so on), then custom storage is ideal for making it all fit without added frustration. Install slatboards, wire racks, pegboards, or other customizable storage solutions in your garage or shed to ensure all your supplies have a spot!
