1. Too much clutter
Even the most seasoned organizer will struggle if there’s just too much stuff! Always declutter before you tackle an organization project. Go through all your items and separate them into three piles: keep, donate, and toss. Really ask yourself if you need something before putting it in the ‘keep’ pile. Cutting down on clutter will make keeping your home organized much easier and more manageable. This crucial first step will help guide you towards a more organized home and life.
2. Not enough space
Don’t try to fit ten winter coats in a closet that is only meant to hold two or three. This will look messy and make it difficult to find what you’re looking for the next time you go to pull out a coat. Plus, many existing storage rails may not be designed to withstand a lot of weight. While stuffing your sock drawer until it can barely close may be a short-term solution, in the long-term, it’s important that you have space for everything. This goes hand-in-hand with decluttering: if you don’t have any room to expand, it might be time to get rid of some of your belongings!
Consider changing the layout of your closets in favor of sturdy and reliable materials and consider finding overflow storage areas like in your bedroom.
3. No system
It’s crucial to establish an organizational system in your home. It can be a simple as labeling drawers or choosing one closet as the craft closet and one closet as the cleaning supplies closet. A system allows you to quickly find what you need – no more digging around in the back of your closet looking for a certain scarf. Abide by the old saying, “A place for everything, and everything in its place”.
