3 Tips for Small Closet Organization

Small organized reach-in closet wardrobe

Living with a small closet can be a challenge! If a total closet makeover isn’t in your budget or timeline, we’ve put together some tips for making the most of limited closet space.

Cycle clothes by season

When you’re dealing with limited space, cycling your wardrobe by season is crucial for keeping your closet organized. There’s no need to have winter clothes in your closet during the summer months, and vice versa. Every few months, set aside some time to go through your closet and pull out any items that aren’t suitable for the current season. There may be some items that you keep in your closet year round, but things like shorts, sandals, heavy sweaters and warm scarves can be switched out with the seasons.

Once you identify the items you no longer need in your closet for the current season, it’s time to pack them away until you need them next. Under-bed storage boxes are a great option for keeping seasonal clothes hidden away. When properly packed, you can also store clothing items in your garage or attic.

Curate your wardrobe

As with any closet, a small closet is less functional when it’s stuffed to the gills. If your closet is so jam-packed that you can barely squeeze another hanger in, it’s time to do a little de-cluttering. When space is limited, it’s important to be choosy about the clothing items you keep. Spend an afternoon sorting through your wardrobe, and create three piles: keep, donate and toss. Donate any clothes that are in good repair, and throw away items that can’t be donated. Be honest with yourself – if you haven’t worn something in over a year, it should probably go in the donate pile. This is also a good time to look for duplicate items. Do you really need six pairs of black pants if you wear jeans to work every day? Evaluate your clothing needs and pare down your wardrobe from there.

Organize your closet

To maximize the space in your small closet, it’s important to keep things organized. The easiest way to do this is to put everything back where it belongs – socks in the sock drawer, t-shirts on the shelf, dresses on the hanger, etc. Not only will this prevent piles of clothes from building up over time, but it will also make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for. You can even go a step further and organize your clothes by color or function (formal, casual, athletic, etc.)
