How NOT to Declutter

organized and clean home libraryWe spend a lot of time with clients discussing how to create storage systems that work for them at Closet & Storage Concepts of South Jersey. To help our clients, we often provide tips on this blog detailing how to create more organized homes as well as how to cut the clutter. However, we’ve also heard and seen ways that aren’t very effective when clearing out clutter. Here are some tips from the Philadelphia team to help you conquer clutter by learning what not to do.

  • Buying Organizers First

This is a common mistake, as many people believe that new organizers, whether new file cabinets or baskets, will help them de-clutter their space. However, this is often not the case. You don’t want to buy new organizers before you sort your stuff, as this can encourage you to keep items, rather than taking time to sort and remove pieces that you don’t need. Plus, once you purge items, in most cases the organizers aren’t needed and can lead you back into the vicious cycle of collecting unneeded items.

  • Not Taking a Break

Giving yourself plenty of time to de-clutter a particular area is a great thing. But not taking a 10-minute break every couple of hours can harm your progress. This is because few people can concentrate on a task like organizing for three hours, let alone for a whole day. Be sure to allot times for breaks to clear your mind. Doing so can help you come back to the task more refreshed. Don’t expect to clean your entire home in one day either. You may become more frustrated as the day continues. Taking chunks of time to de-clutter will set you up for success.

  • Don’t Continue to Edit

If you don’t continue to edit every few months, or at least once a year, it is unlikely that you will be able to maintain any storage system that you have in place. Maintaining your closet or home storage solution may be even harder to do than when you first create a system, and de-cluttering is one reason why it is so difficult. Not de-cluttering continuously will surely lead to the downfall of your storage organizer.

  • Try to Make it Perfect

While details are important to help you create a dream closet or any other dream organization system, know that trying too hard to clear out every piece you have will only make you frustrated. It’s okay to keep pieces that you love and if your storage system isn’t perfected the first time, it’s okay. You’ll continue to work at it and create something you’re happy with. Our designers at Closet & Storage Concepts know how to help you create a great storage system. We’ll make sure to help you attain your perfect organizer.

  • Saying You HAVE to De-clutter

This is a surefire way to destroy any chance that you have at clearing out old pieces. Try going into it with a positive mentality such as thinking that you are creating a space that you love, or making room for items that really speak to your personality and character. De-cluttering does take work, and going into it with a negative mindset won’t help you.
