Going by category is a broad way to look at your items and declutter. You can use the three trusted piles of
Go By Objectives
If you want to make more of an impact from the start, declutter based on your objectives. If you want to get your guest room in order for family and friends, start in this room. If you get annoyed during your morning routine, consider organizing your entryway or closets first. Make a list of the most pressing objectives and problem areas, and then work from that list.
Listen to Your Stress and Anxiety Levels
Decluttering tends to be overwhelming especially if you’re not used to doing it on a regular basis. Listening to how you’re feeling is a great way to make decluttering an enjoyable and cathartic experience. If you’re feeling like you’re ready to tackle your biggest problem area, by all means, go for it! Feeling pressured and not up to it? Start with easy tasks like clearing out junk mail or putting shoes away. No matter what tasks you do, make sure you leave time for breaks!
Follow a Program
This is a good way to go if you’re looking for a little more structure. Methods like Marie Kondo’s KonMari method take you through categories based on clothing, paperwork, and miscellaneous items like kitchen and garage items. A little research can give you an overview of how to tackle these categories, or you could read it straight from the source. Pick up her two best-selling novels The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and Spark Joy.
Other methods include doing challenges like the 100 Thing Challenge or trying out a capsule wardrobe.
