April has just begun and spring has officially sprung! Next week marks a new beginning with the temperature picking up as we transition into sunny days. With the change in the air, now is the perfect time to clean out your closet and build an organizational system for the spring and summer seasons. Read below to find out how to best prepare your closet for spring.
Out with the old, in with the new!
One of the best ways to optimize your closet for the spring is to safely put your winter clothes away in storage. This can be done in multiple different ways but in order to best protect your items and prevent color fading, use clear plastic bins. For bigger items such as down jackets and coats, you can use vacuum-sealed bags to save space. Before storing items it’s important to thoroughly wash or dry clean your clothes so that any stains or dirt doesn’t settle into the clothes while they’re stored away.

Light fabrics and light colors
When deciding what to leave in your closet for spring and summer consider what environments you will find yourself in. For example, if you work in an office with air conditioning it’ll be good to keep some cardigans and jackets despite the weather becoming warmer. However, if you think you’re going to be out a lot, you’ll want to opt for lightweight fabrics such as cotton and linen. Silk is also a great option but be aware that extreme heat exposure can cause discoloration in silk.
Besides fabric choice, fabric color is also really imperative to a proper spring closet. Darker fabrics will absorb heat and retain it longer as opposed to lighter fabrics. For a spring color palette, consider light pastel colors such as white, grey, pink, yellow, green, and blue, and avoid darker colors such as maroon, navy, and black. A brighter color palette will reflect light and heat keeping you cooler longer!
